NFPW Registration Approaching

It pays to get your registration in early!!

The early-bird registration deadline for the National; Federation of Press Women’s conference in Idaho Falls, Idaho, is August 10 — $299 for members and $345 for non-members. After that date, registration increases to $345 for members and $395 for non-members.

The conference runs Sept. 11-13.

2008 Spring Conference and 30th Anniversary Celebration

Twenty NCPC members took home 95 winning entries and 45 First Place wins in the annual Communications Contest at the Annual Spring Conference and 30th Anniversary Celebration May 16-17 at the Clarion Hotel in Raleigh.

The First Place entries now compete in NFPW’s annual Communications Contest. Winners will be announced Sept. 13 at a banquet during the annual conference to be held in Idaho Falls, Id. Plan now to attend!

Highlights of the Spring Conference included Don Vaughan, founder of Triangle Area Freelancers, sharing tips garnered from his 17 years of freelancing at Saturday’s workshop, and a lecture by Cokie Roberts, a National Public Radio commentator and author of several books, Friday night at N.C. State University’s McKimmon Center on her latest - “Ladies of Liberty.”

Members were particularly pleased to meet with Roberts for a few minutes before her remarks.

Cartrette is NCPC’s 2008 Communicator of Achievement

Clara Cartrette, NCPC secretary for the past three years, is Communicator of Achievement for 2008. She will represent the organization at NFPW’s COA competition Sept. 12, when a national winner is named.

Cartrette is news editor of the News-Reporter in Whiteville.

Incoming NCPC President Gwen White told of Cartrette’s strong desire in 1978 to create a North Carolina affiliate of NFPW, and her invitation to 10 other journalists in order to have a charter approved. She served as NCPC’s first president and has been an active member for the past 30 years, holding numerous other offices.

Overall Excellence Award Highlights Three High Schools

The annual Clara Cartrette Award of Excellence in High Scholastic Journalism was presented to the staff of Wingspan from West Henderson High in Hendersonville (advisor Brenda Gorsuch).

The runners-up were the staff of Cedar Cliff Notes at A.C. Reynolds High in Asheville (advisor Phyllis Cooper), and the staff of Pine Whispers from R.J. Reynolds in Winston-Salem (advisor Kathy Rucker).

Judging is of one issue and based on a number of criteria including: overall story coverage, timeliness and balance of coverage, and design and use of graphics.

NCPC Elects New Officers for 2008-2009

This year’s officers elected during the annual Business Meeting to serve for 2008-09 include: President, Gwen White; Vice President-Membership, Suzy Barile; Vice President-Contest, Ken Bucher; Treasurer, Clara Cartrette; Secretary, Suzanne Tate. Jo Ann Mathews will handle website inquiries and Ric Carter will serve on the Board of Directors.
